What is "data selling" and which loan apps are known for it?

Back

Data selling is the practice of transferring your personal information to third parties for money or other benefits. Legitimate financial apps explicitly deny this practice in their privacy policies, but predatory apps are known to sell data.

  • Figure Lending explicitly states: "we do not sell your Personal Data to any other entities"
  • Abound states: "we never sell your data to any third parties"

Which apps are known for data selling? Research identifies predatory "SpyLoan" apps that exfiltrate data which "can also be sold or used to conduct other malicious activities against their targets" . Specific app names change frequently as Google removes them and new ones appear. The Nigerian ngCERT advises users to "validate the authenticity of financial apps before patronizing them" .

What data is sold:

  • Contact lists (for spam and phishing)
  • Financial transaction data
  • Government ID photos (for identity theft)
  • Selfies and ID document photos (for impersonation)
